Barber Dodge Pro Series Test Driver Oswaldo Negri, of Aventura, FL, recently had his first opportunity to drive the famed Daytona International Raceway in the Rolex 24 Hour layout as he was invited by the Cegwa Sport team to help them develop their new Daytona Prototype Racer. The 41st running of the Rolex 24 will be the debut race for the new Daytona Prototypes, and teams are working feverishly to learn the new cars.
The car initially had the settings from the factory, and it was a handful to drive, to say the least, said Negri. We worked on a progression of settings to improve the handling all the way around the track.
The 24 Hour layout is frequently utilized by the Skip Barber Race Series, giving some competitors the opportunity to race on the famous track, and giving other drivers some important seat time in preparation for the 24 event. The 24-Hour layout features both high-speed running on the high banks of Daytona as well as the tight, low speed corners in the infield section of the track, so getting the right set-up is always a compromise.
It is just another day in the office, though, for someone like Negri, who spends most of his days testing the Barber Dodge Reynard 98E as part of a comprehensive program to insure parity in the Pro Series.
Negri was pleased with his first ever run at Daytona, and is looking forward to the future.
I kept moving up in the timing charts as we got closer and closer on the set-up, said Negri. I am excited about getting back into the car again in the near future to keep improving our times, with an eye toward the big race in February.
