Asaro charges through the rain.

Toronto, Canada (May 26, 2002): Billy Asaro showed off his driving skills and lightning fast reflexes as he drove from last to fourth yesterday in a meeting of the British Formula Three Scholarship Class on a rain-soaked Croft Circuit. Today, however, intense rain caused the cancellation of the second race of the weekend at the track near Leicester, England.

Yesterday's race was started in wet conditions, but, with the exception of one driver, everyone started on slick tires believing the track would dry. Asaro started fifth, but stalled at the start and fell to the back of the field. As the rest of the cars disappeared into the distance, he restarted and shot off in pursuit.

"The start was a disaster for me," Asaro said. "Actually, it was a disaster for my team, Sweeney Racing, because I stalled and my teammate crashed out on the first lap."

The track did not dry, as most had anticipated, and drivers struggled to tame cars that were slithering around on dry-weather tires. The exceptions were Justin Sherwood and Asaro. Sherwood, on wet-weather tires, was comfortably pulling away at the front while Asaro, charging hard in last place, showed masterful control on slicks. He soon caught the tail enders and cut his way through before setting off for his next target.

He fought back to fourth and, as the race began to wind down, closed right up on Clivio Piccione and Mohammed Fairuz who were battling for second place.

"If there was just one more lap, I would have taken second," said Asaro after the race. "I came up on them really fast, and I was ready to attack, but the checkered flag came out and fourth was as far as I could get. It was a good race. Very interesting to be out there on slick tires. I'm actually hoping for rain again tomorrow because I think I have a very good chance of winning on a wet track."

Ironically, it was rain that caused today's race to be cancelled. A fierce downpour prompted officials to call the race on safety grounds.

The British Formula Three Championship heads to Silverstone for another pair of races next weekend.
