Barton Mawer Returns to the Podium at the Nurburgring
Australian Barton Mawer has turned around his recent run of bad luck to return to the National class podium at the German round of the 2005 British Formula 3 International Series this weekend.
The round was held at the home of the European Formula 1 track, the Nurburgring.
Barton was hampered by understeer all weekend, making the car difficult to drive and causing him to struggle for pace throughout the round. Barton qualified 4th for the first race and after working on the car set up over night, he was able to set a time that was good enough to qualify in 2nd position for the second race.
The car was still suffering from understeer in the first race and Barton continued to struggle to match the pace of the front runners in his class. He fought hard with his car throughout the race and was able to hold onto 5th place, picking up 10 valuable championship points.
Barton's perseverance paid off in the second race, rewarding him with a well deserved podium finish. Despite losing momentum at the start of the race as a result of being forced wide and almost into the pit wall, Barton had an excellent opening lap and was able to close right up to class leader Duran. Barton again fought hard to control his car in this race and he struggled to hold onto Duran. As the race continued, he dropped back was passed by Fisher, but was able to hold on to 3rd place, securing his place on the podium.
"Having never been to the track before we were on the back foot from the start of the weekend. After practice and the first qualifying session on Friday we were able to identify a number of changes that we could make to the set up of the car and we were a lot stronger in the second qualifying session first thing on Saturday morning, but we just could not get rid of the understeer in the car. It is great to be back on the podium again though -- I had almost forgotten what it was like! We are still sitting comfortably in 2nd position in the Championship and hopefully we can build on this and get right back into the Championship battle at Mondello Park in two weeks"
