Calado sets the marker at Snetterton
James Calado, who will be bidding to secure the championship runner-up spot in tomorrow's and Monday's rounds of the Cooper Tires British F3 International series at Snetterton, made a great start to his campaign today by posting the best time in pre-event testing at the Norfolk track.
Calado's Racing Steps Foundation Carlin-prepared Dallara-Volkswagen secured top spot in this morning's dry test session; drizzle in the afternoon session ensured that none of his rivals could match his mark of 1m 01.076s, very nearly a second inside last year's pole time.
"The car felt good in the dry and in the wet," said Calado. "We were caught out by the rain in the afternoon and never had the chance to try the car on new tyres, but all in all I'm pleased and it's a good start to the weekend."
Calado's closest challenger in the dry was Raikkonen Robertson Racing's Carlos Huertas, who posted 1m 01.221s in his Mercedes-powered machine. In the afternoon session, it was Carlin man Adriano Buzaid who emerged on top with a best of 1m 01.256s.
Newly crowned champion Jean-Eric Vergne ended his day fifth quickest overall in the Red Bull Junior Team car, with Calado's chief rival for championship second, Fortec pilot Oli Webb, seventh quickest overall.
In the National class, Menasheh Idafar outbid his rivals James Cole and Juan Carlos Sistos to lead the way with a best lap of 1m 01.639s -- good enough for 10th overall -- in his T-Sport Dallara Mugen-Honda.
Round 25 of the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, with two further races -- alongside twin rounds of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship -- scheduled for Bank Holiday Monday.
