MORE POINTS FOR FISHER ON DIFFICULT WEEKEND
Team SWR-Crypton endured a difficult and occasionally bizarre British Formula Three weekend at Thruxton over the Spring Bank Holiday, but Josh Fisher did extremely well to salvage some useful championship points despite various misfortunes.
His team-mate Nick Jones endured an even more luckless weekend, only completing one racing lap.
The frustrations began in qualifying, where the team did not hit upon quite the right set-up for the cars around this ultra-fast track. Fisher and Jones were both hampered by this, and qualified fifth and eighth in the National Class for race one, then slipped a touch to sixth and ninth in the second session.
With overtaking rather difficult at most circuits in F3, Josh and Nick already knew that the races would be quite tough for them. Sadly Jones didn't even get a chance to try and make progress, as Cheong Lou Meng speared into the back of Nick's SWR-Crypton Dallara on lap two and sent him spinning into the barriers.
Fisher showed great speed once the race was underway, quickly moving up to fourth in the National Class. For the first ten laps he was within two seconds of the class leader as the National title contenders ran together in a five-car group, but then the battling Jonathan Kennard and Charlie Hollings began to hold Josh up. Unable to find a way past them, he had to settle for fourth place, although his fastest lap had been just 0.1s slower than that of class winner Barton Mawer.
Race two would provide more tribulations for both Jones and Fisher. Nick's second race was even shorter than his first, as a driveshaft breakage on the start took him out -- poor reward for Jones and the SWR team, who had worked incredibly hard to fix his very battered car after race one. Fisher quickly moved up to fourth place and looked set to progress further, only to have to pit with a highly unusual problem. One of the 'tear-off' strips from one of his competitor's helmet visor had -- remarkably -- wrapped itself around the hole in his airbox, drastically reducing his SWR-Crypton Dallara's power. A pit visit to attend to the problem left Josh too far behind the pack and he had to settle for eighth place.
"The bad luck really hit us hard this weekend," said SWR-Crypton Team Principal Trevor Powell. "After the set-up problems in qualifying, the team worked very hard until late on Saturday night to get the cars right for Sunday, but qualifying is a big part of F3 and it's hard to make progress in the races. Poor Nick never had a chance to show what he could do, and Josh's problem with the tear-off was absolutely incredible. We just have to hope that luck is more on our side at the next rounds."
