New junior class added to Phillip Island MotoGP schedule
The new Supersport 300 category has been added to the support card for the 2017 Australian MotoGP round at Phillip Island.
The new feeder category is making its debut at both international and Australian Championship level this year, with the Supersport 300 World Championship supporting European World Superbikes rounds, and the local Aussie edition running on the Australian Superbikes bill.
Having supported the Australian WSBK round earlier this year, the Australian Supersport 300 series is now set to get its second dance on the big stage, having been named alongside Moto2, Moto3, and Australian Superbikes as part of the Australian MotoGP event in October.
“We want to attract up and coming riders to the class and we certainly encourage them to apply for the opportunity to race at an international event,” said Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle.
“With a jam-packed on-track schedule, we are excited about another thrilling and successful Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix showcasing world-class racing.”
Adding Supersport 300 to the bill means that a famous Australian bike racing name will return to the Australian GP entry list. Oli Bayliss – son of MotoGP race winner and three-time World Superbike champ Troy Bayliss – is currently competing in the Australian series, in what is the 13-year-old’s first full season of senior road racing.
“The shift in classes has seen the boom of the Supersport 300, where young riders and future talent have a chance to gain professional experience,” said retired Ducati star Bayliss.
“It will be great to see Oli race at the Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2017 for the first time.”
