November 16, 2003, Rosamond, CA --- November's edition of Willow Springs' Toyota Cup series saw several promising riders come into their own with each garnering their highest finishes of the year at the "Fastest Road in the West".
Perennial bridesmaid Stoney Landers won his first Formula One victory of the season when leader Jack Pfeifer took a tumble late in the running. Landers had earned six podium positions in 2003, but until today, had not held the top spot. Based in Burbank, Landers races a Suzuki under the Dianetics/SSED banner.
"The race was definitely exciting," claimed Landers as he accepted his first place trophy. "I've given guys the win this year by falling off in Turn 5, so I totally know the feeling -- I feel for Jack, he was riding real well ... but I'll take the win!"
Chris Siglin, of Clayton, California rode to a second place finish aboard a new Suzuki GSX-R750 he won earlier this month at Road Atlanta as a part of the Valvoline/EMGO/Suzuki Talent Search. Siglin's best finish in Formula One racing at WSIR this year had been an 8th place ride back in March.
Finishing third was Corey Eaton out of Placerville, California who rides for Roseville Cycle. Eaton had won another third place back in June but more often has found himself just a hair's breath away from the podium with a fourth or fifth place finish.
The race got off to a bad start as Chris Ulrich and Chris Peris collided in Turn 3 of the first lap. While neither rider was injured, scattered debris caused a halt in racing. After a restart, Las Vegas based Jack Pfeifer quickly established his lead aboard his Motorex Suzuki. A group of four more riders were soon jockeying for the second and third slots. In addition to Landers, Siglin and Eaton, Pfeifer's rival and fellow Las Vegan, Jeff Stern was weaving his way through traffic in an attempt to win the points required to best Jeremy Toye, WSMC's current leader.
Toye missed this month's Toyota Cup running due to prior commitments to race in the Macau Grand Prix in China. He is reported to have finished 9th there.
With each new lap, the pack seemed to trade positions, often at every turn. Yet somehow Pfeifer always managed to maintain his lead. Suddenly, with only a lap and a half remaining in the race, Pfeifer found himself flat on the track as his bike lost traction going through turn six. At that point, officials decided to call the race as Pfeifer had the wind knocked out of him and was sprawled across the track in a hazardous position. Officials awarded Landers, Siglin and Eaton the podium positions. Pfeifer did not require medical attention.
Rounding out the top ten finishers were Stern in 4th, who now leads in overall track points; North Hollywood's Stephen Hewitt in 5th; Will Eikenberry of Littlerock in 6th; Palmdale's Skye Girard in 7th; Tyler Paulson of Silverado in 8th; San Diegan Marte Cooksey in 9th and David Littlebrook of La Mirad in 10th. Nine out of top ten rode Suzuki.
The Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Series is a yearlong calendar of events sanctioned by the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club.
