Competition continues to increase in Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series.
Number of preliminary heat winners soars in 2002.

(Lake Hamilton, Fla.) - The 2002 Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series continues to show the increased competition that was evident during the 2001 season. During 2001, many of the Unlimited Hydroplane teams became more competitive producing five different winners in six races. The increased competition has continued in 2002 and has been especially evident in the preliminary heats of racing.

Over the years, these preliminary heats have been one of the most telling aspect of this increased competition. Besides deciding who will participate in the final race, preliminary heats often determine the outcome of the championship. Dave Villwock and Miss Budweiser parlayed their success in these preliminary heats to win the 2001 championship.

To track the competition, Hydro-Prop reviewed the results of these preliminary heats over the past four years, from 1999 - 2002. The main area examined was the number of different heat winners per race. Percentages from the past four years show a dramatic increase in the number of different heat winners. For example, in 1999 the total percentage of different heat winners per race was 57%. Through the first three races this season, that has jumped to 77%, an increase of 20% in those four years.

"When we took over the Unlimited Hydroplanes Series one of our main goals was to increase the competition," said Gary Garbrecht, Chairman of Hydro-Prop. "Through the efforts of all the Unlimited teams and our organization, the competition seems to be headed in the right direction. Producing five different race winners last year and the competitive heats we have seen this season, indicate that some of our initiatives are working."

"In the first three races this season, eight of the eleven teams have scored preliminary heat victories," continued Garbrecht. "With half the season left, we hope that trend continues. Maybe we'll see all 11 boats winning heats. Now that would be exciting!"
