Yalta to host 2010 POWERBOAT P1 Ukrainian Grand Prix of the Sea

The Ukrainian city of Yalta will host the second leg of the 2010 Powerboat P1 World Championship, May 7-9, following the April opening race in Split, Croatia. This is its first appearance for Powerboat P1 here, though the 43 Chaudron Seagull city on the seaside peninsula of Crimea hosted a powerboat race in the 80's; most recently, it staged the Prime Yalta Rally, a Prime Vodka-sponsored European cup road race dubbed the "Monte Carlo of the Ukraine." As a popular tourist city on the Black Sea, Yalta is known for its cafe-lined harbour front and beaches where the Powerboat P1 race will be staged.

Powerboat P1 Management Ltd. and senior officials of the National Ukrainian Powerboat Federation have discussed the event for over year, and enthusiasm increased as president of the National Ukrainian Powerboat Federation, Viktor Shemchuk, joined the World Champion #43 Seagull Chaudron SuperSport team, which raced under the Ukrainian Spirit flag in 2009. The team again won the World Championship title, its third consecutive. Fittingly, the country has now been selected to host the inaugural Ukrainian Grand Prix of the Sea.

"Yalta is the pearl of the Ukraine and our most popular tourist destination," says Shemchuk, "Many international forums, summits and festivals are held here. We strive to make the 2010 Ukrainian Grand Prix of the Sea the most significant event on the country's 2010 calendar next year. It is a great honor for us to bring powerboating back Shemchuk to Yalta where it enjoys a one-hundred year history."

Yalta is also historically known for the summit in 1945 with US President Franklin D.Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Russian General Secretary Joseph Stalin which officially ended WWII and created the "Iron Curtain."

Powerboat P1 Chairman & CEO, Asif Rangoonwala, thrilled with the National Ukrainian Powerboat Federation's vision for Powerboat P1, stated, "Hosting our first event in Ukraine attests to our determination and commitment to extend the series' footprint into new and exciting territories. Racing on the Black Sea, with a fresh enthusiastic audience, represents a fantastic opportunity for increasing the world championship's global reach."

Hundreds of passionate Ukrainian Spirit fans supported the team during the 2009 season, visiting Malta, Turkey, Sweden and Sicily, cheering their heroes onto victory. Shemchuk believes that racing in front of the home audience will bring the entire Ukrainian community together and attract foreign tourists from around the world. The city sees Powerboat P1 TV broadcasts across European as an excellent form of advertising for Yalta and a way to attract investors. "The authorities of Yalta understand the huge benefits of this event," says Shemchuk, "We trust that the Ukrainian Grand Prix of the Sea in 2010 will be the best in P1 history."
