22 Motorsport Drivers Finish in the Points for the Scottish Rally
Dumfries - Deep in the southwest of Scotland, Jennie-Lee Hermansson and Lorna Smith flew through the Scottish forests for the eighth running of the Scottish Rally. Jennie-Lee Hermansson and co-driver Howard Davies showed no signs of nervousness after their adventures on the Rally of Wales and the two were obviously working well together, finishing 6th in the Production Cup Class and 19th overall. Lorna Smith made the most of her "home advantage" and finished ahead of her teammate with an excellent result, achieving 2nd in the Production Cup and 14th overall. With both cars in the points, 22 Motorsport has inched ahead to a three-way tie for 4th place in the Teams' Championship.
Round 3 of the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship proved to be a dusty affair, with several competitors within a few points of one another before the Friday evening start. On Leg 1 Jennie-Lee tackled the conditions well, if somewhat steadily, and by the end of the first day she had finished 8th in her class. Lorna Smith continued to improve throughout that first evening, and despite suffering an unusual puncture on SS2 Heathill, she challenged hard to finish 4th.
The Rallying continued early on Saturday morning, with competitors blazing a trail through the Galloway forests. In spite of the early morning showers, the hazy heat and gritty, dusty conditions prevailed. Sharp stones littered the stages threatening punctures, however, the 22 Motorsport Drivers were undaunted. By midday Hermansson was pleased with the progress she had made to move up to 4th place, even though she was in a less powerful replacement Subaru Impreza. Lorna too was steadily improving all the time, and advanced to 3rd in class without any problems.
By the end of the event Lorna Smith had achieved 4th overall in the Production Cup Championship and Hermansson 5th, and both drivers agreed that the Scottish Rally had been a good and challenging event.
The 22 Motorsport team is already planning improvements for the car and drivers for the Jim Clark Memorial Rally in early July and with over 160 miles of competitive driving, it will be a challenge of mental stamina as well as physical fitness.
Team Quotes:
Jennie-Lee Hermansson- " Well, you know, I could do a lot better. Since this is my first year in the British Rally Championship, I must use this year to learn. I am lucky to have such an encouraging team behind me. Hopefully, I will continue to improve and bring the team better results. When? I do not know, it depends on a lot of things."
Lorna Smith- "The car felt really good. The weather was better than we expected but the dust was a real problem. However, we delivered a solid performance here. To be 2nd already in my class is a real achievement but I want to win. We will be back in Scotland for the Jim Clark Rally and I will have had some more practice under my belt. So we'll see."
Will Hunt- "We are certainly very pleased with both drivers. Jennie-Lee is at a critical stage of fine-tuning her talent and speed. With each rally she puts in so much genuine effort to improve. Lorna was fantastic this weekend; she consistently succeeded in taking over one place after another until she finished 2nd in her class. With only a few outings in this car, she has performed very well. We are proud of both our drivers."
