Scottish tarmac test next for Zimbabwean rallying hero
21 year old Zimbabwean rally ace Conrad Rautenbach heads to this weekends Jim Clark International Rally, Round 2 of the 2006 Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship, on a high after scoring a triumphant victory on his home event 2 weeks ago.
Conrad, who campaigns a Geoff Jones Motorsport run 2006 spec Subaru Impreza N12 in the British championship returned home to Zimbabwe to defend the title he had won on the 2005 Dunlop Zimbabwe Challenge Rally. With the Zimbabwean event counting towards the FIA African Rally Championship Conrad was faced with some stiff competition this year. But a powerful performance by the young man, co-driving once more by his highly experienced British co- driver David Senior, saw the pair steer their Subaru Impreza to an impressive 10 minute victory over the 3 day event!
As well as winning on home soil Conrad has also returned to the Junior World Rally Championship since his last BRC outing, where he followed up his impressive 3rd in the JWRC on the Rally of Corsica with a very mature drive to 2nd on the extremely tough Rally of Sardinia. Conrad now lies 4th overall in the Junior World Rally Championship standings!
Conrad is eagerly anticipating this weekends Jim Clark Rally, and with some impressive results on tarmac already this year he has proved he is a good all rounder.
The very first competitive mileage I did in my BRC Subaru Impreza was on the Manx National Rally, and we finished 2nd in Group N, so I'm hoping we can carry on that performance.
Conrad will be eager to be competitive from the word go this weekend, but knows he faces some stiff competition from the likes of twice British champions Mark Higgins and Jonny Milner, as well as the threat from the S1600 cars of fellow JWRC contender Guy Wilks and M-Sport test driver Roman Kresta.
The rally begins from Kelso Race Course on Friday afternoon at 3:30pm and finishes on Saturday evening after 150 stage miles of treacherous tarmac rallying.
