Yorkshire yields good points for Gwynn

Welsh based rallying co-driver George Gwynn called the notes for top 'Stars of the Future' driver Mark Gamble as the pair overcame a series of niggling problems on the International debut of their new Citroen C2 on their way to 2nd overall on the International Rally of Yorkshire 'Allstars' Rally on Saturday.

George and Mark, reunited for the first time since their massive Rally Isle of Man crash, were eager to get going on the Rally of Yorkshire and with a successful test in the Citroen recently Mark was confident that they would be on the pace from the word go.

Tied for 3rd fastest through the opening 'spectator stage' boosted the pairs confidence and a big push through the first 'proper' forest stage, the 9 mile Cropton Stage, saw them take the first stage win for the new car, going 2 seconds quicker than Rally Isle of Man winner Rob Barret and moving into the overall lead as well. However a time consuming spin in Gale Rigg cost the pair a lot of time and dropped them back to third position.

We just got caught out on a square right into square left onto tarmac. It was like driving on ball bearings there and for a brief moment I thought we were going over! quipped young George after the stage.

Mechanical problems on the 8.5 mile high speed Long Moor stage proved distracting as the lower control arm bushes wore out, leaving the steering was all over the place. Despite this Gamble and Gwynn were still fastest, 8 seconds quicker than Barret and moved to within 5 seconds of the leader. With the problem only able to be fixed at service the pair persevered through the 10 miles of Langdale, dropping 12 seconds to the leaders but managed to cling on to 2nd position.

Despite the steering still being 'wayward' Mark's talent was tested to its full on the longest stage of the rally, the 18 mile run through Dalby forest. Pushing hard the pair worked flawlessly as a team and only dropped another 5 seconds to the rapid Micra of Rob Barret, despite having, as Mark described it rather vague steering!

With the car repaired at service but with Barret over 25 seconds in front Mark and George set about consolidating second position with a string of top times including fastest on the second run through Gale Rigg, some 21 seconds faster than on their first run through!

Today has been fantastic. We worked so well together and apart from the spin neither one of us put a foot wrong. The new car is great and apart from the steering problems it never missed a beat!

This result moves George back into the frame for the co-drivers championship title with only the Tempest Rally, on the 11th of November, still to run.

Before then, though, George will be out in Jersey, calling the notes for Vincent Hughes in a turbocharged Ford Escort Cosworth.
