Vauxhall Motorsport's British Rally Championship driver, Mark Higgins took the coveted National Rally Driver of the Year Award for the second time in four years at last night's Autosport Awards ceremony (Sunday, December 3). The Manxman, who first won the award in 1997, was once again voted for by readers of Autosport Magazine after his commanding performance in this year's Mobil 1 British Rally Championship which saw Higgins win three of the six rounds outright in his Vauxhall Astra F2 Kit Car. Along with teammate, Neil Wearden, also a National Rally Driver of the Year finalist, Higgins played a crucial part in helping Vauxhall to take this year's BRC manufacturers' title.

"What a fantastic way to finish off the year, both for myself and for Vauxhall," commented a delighted Higgins. "I was runner up this year in the BRC, won the F2 category at the recent Network Q Rally of Great Britain and this really is the icing on the cake. All I can hope for now is that all those who have followed my progress will be able to see me on the world rally scene before too long."

Higgins, who lives near Newtown in Wales, was partnered in his BRC campaign by Hereford's Bryan Thomas, the 2000 British Champion Co-driver. The Astra proved itself to be the fastest car in the British championship this year and between them, the Vauxhall pairing of Mark Higgins and team-mate, Neil Wearden won 60 of the 89 special stages that featured in the 2000 Mobil 1 BRC.
