Milner prepares for maximum Clark attack
Double British Rally Championship winner Jonny Milner is all set for this weekend's Jim Clark Memorial Rally, as the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship makes the switch from gravel to tarmac for the next three rounds.
After taking a superbly judged victory on the recent Scottish International Rally, the Team Dynamics and Pirelli backed Subaru driver heads to the only closed public road rally held in mainland UK confident that he can continue his recent good form. Victories in Wales and Scotland have seen Jonny close in on series leader David Higgins, and the Yorkshireman from Huggate is determined to make the most of his Morgan Motorsport leased Subaru Impreza WRC S8 on the super fast tarmac lanes near to the border town of Duns in Berwickshire.
Higgins and Milner have been neck and neck throughout the season in their respective cars, but as Milner and Welsh co-driver Nicky Beech turned up the heat in Dumfries, they are more than ready for the challenge offered by the fourth round of the British Rally Championship this season.
Milner is upbeat about his prospects on an event that has brought him both joy and pain in the past:
"I'm feeling good ahead of the event' said Jonny. "The car is well proven and well sorted for the demands of tarmac, so there are no fears for us on the rally. Last year was a very good event for our main sponsor Team Dynamics, as one of their lightweight tarmac alloy wheels stayed completely intact for over seven miles on one stage -- a testament to the strength and durability of the wheel after a puncture at speeds of over 100mph in places.
Team Dynamics are not the only team partner to have really helped us this season however, as we are also getting great performance from the Turbo R Fuel, supplied by 76 Racing. It is a well proved rally fuel now and it has certainly given us the edge in the last couple of events -- it is certainly the most responsive car that I have ever driven.
We've also had increased support from the likes of Green Filters, who have supplied us with special tarmac air filters for this event, and of course, the technical and parts backing that we receive from Prodrive is also a major help to us as we continue the fight to make it three British Rally Championship's in a row. There is no doubt that it will be a tough fight to the end, as both David and Austin McHale are more than capable of winning the tarmac events as well. It will be close, but I hope to have the edge and grab maximum points if I can."
Milner has finished first and second in the points standings on his two most recent visits to the Scottish event. In the soaking wet conditions of last year's rally, Jonny produced a polished performance to claim the points bounty after rivals Tapio Laukkenen and Jari-Matti Latvala both crashed out of the rally on the same corner. Milner went on to finish runner up on the event -- but crucially -- he extended his championship lead en route to title success.
In 2002, a rare Milner error caused him to hit a brick wall on one stage, only for the turbo on the Toyota Corolla WRC to go in service just after this. Battling back in fine style, Jonny was able to claim second in the points as he marched onwards to his first ever British Rally Championship title. Will it be third time lucky for the third year? Milner, Team Dynamics, Pirelli, Prodrive, and everyone associated with the team intend to give it their very best shot to make it three wins from three.
Milner, Beech and the Team Dynamics Subaru outfit are supported by Team Dynamics, Pirelli, Goldline Bearings Ltd, Sun Diagnostics UK, Ferodo, NGK Spark Plugs, SPARCO, Superflow Exhausts, Elanders Hindson, Green Filters, 76 R Fuels and Competition Car Insurance.
