Double podium success for MSR Motorsport on Pirelli Rally
Thirsk-based rally car preparation company MSR Motorsport had double podium success on this weekend's Pirelli Rally (April 20-21).
MSR were running number one seed Ryan Champion, who finished third overall on the Pirelli International Rally in Jonny Milner's Group N Mitsubishi Evo 9, and Davy Hughes, who won the Pirelli National Rally in his Mitsubishi Evo Step 2 WRC.
Castleton-based Champion was using the same car two-time British Rally Champion Milner is using to contest the Evo Challenge this season after the Driffield driver generously loaned his fellow Yorkshireman the car as a one-off for the opening round of the British Rally Championship (BRC) as he could not commit to the entire series due to time constraints.
Champion and co-driver Craig Thorley finished-up behind rally winner Guy Wilks in the Mitsubishi works car and reigning British Champion Mark Higgins in the Stobart Subaru on the Kielder Forest-based event. He lost some time with a puncture on Saturday whilst lying in fourth spot, but managed to edge back into third position on stage 12 after Gwyndaf Evans picked up a problem and claimed 16 points on the BRC drivers' leaderboard.
MSR Motorsport boss Mark Robson said: "It's a very good result for Ryan. It's good for him to get on the podium and get off to a good start in the first round of the championship. Ryan had limited time in the car before the event and we struggled a bit with the set-up to suit him on Friday evening but he had a trouble-free day on Saturday apart from dropping around a minute with a puncture in the afternoon and we're really pleased with the result."
Hughes and co-driver Bruce Harper took charge of the National event from stage two and never looked back as they finished 17.8 seconds ahead of second-placed Paul Griffiths. They also posted the fastest times across three of the seven tests.
Robson added: "Davy won the clubmen's event last year and has followed on that success with a win on the National Rally this year, which is a good result for him and we're delighted with the victory."
MSR will be running Hughes and co-driver Louise Sutherland in round three of the Scottish Rally Championship, the Aberdeen-based Granite City Rally, on Saturday (April 28).
Hughes will once again be behind the wheel of his Mitsubishi Evo Step 2 WRC and heads into the event in eighth place overall with 37 points in the Scottish Championship drivers' standings.
