Pirelli Star Driver final looms
The Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship's Pirelli Star Driver shootout is just two weeks away and the nominees have had their instructions for this, the fourth running of the prestigious prize-drive final.
While the actual prize will only be confirmed on the day of the judges' eventual decision, it will definitely be a funded drive in the 2011 Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship, a cash equivalent estimated to be in six figures.
One driver has been selected from each of the six rallies with the winning Junior from Citroen Racing and Fiesta Sport Trophies as well as Swift Sport Cup and the overall Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge.
Since the Fiesta Junior winner Elfyn Evans already had a nomination from the opening round in Wales, nine finalists will go head-to-head over three days of competition, testing driving, pace-note making and media skills as well as a basic fitness test and the all-important final interview.
The drivers do not need to use their regular co-drivers for the final, but since Phil Mills, 1997 British and 2003 World Rally Champion co-driver, will be assessing their ability to make and execute accurate pacenotes, a comfortable partnership will be required in the car.
For the first time two separate stages will be used in the shootout, which the crews will not have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with, apart from on the two low speed reconnaissance passes of the gravel stages. All nine will, however, be given some time in both the front wheel drive and four wheel drive cars to get used to the unfamiliar vehicles.
The Pirelli Star Driver scheme is designed to give drivers an opportunity to progress in the sport, taking the financial pressure off for a year and exposing the winners to publicity that they might not otherwise receive.
The winner will be expected to gel as part of a new team, essential for the development of drivers who aspire to IRC or WRC careers in the future. Outgoing Pirelli Star Driver Keith Cronin knows better than most that this relationship is key, settling with Pirelli TEG Sport to make history; the first Pirelli Star Driver winner to take the British Rally Championship.
However there is certainly no requirement for the 2010 winner to try to emulate Cronin. The prize and expectation of this year's PSD champion will depend very much on the individual, consistency and improvement all that is required from the winner.
The winner of the 2010 Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship Pirelli Star Driver and his prize will be announced on Thursday 21st October.
The nine finalists are:
Elfyn Evans -- International Rally North Wales & Fiesta SportTrophy Junior winner
Mikko Pajunen -- Pirelli International Rally
Craig Breen -- Jim Clark International Rally
Jarkko Nikara -- International Rally Isle of Man
Daniel McKenna -- Toddsleap.com Rally NI
Alastair Fisher -- International Rally Yorkshire
Jonny Greer -- Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge winner
Robert Barrable -- Citroen Racing Trophy Junior winner
Tom Clark -- Swift Sport Cup Junior winner
