Guy Wilks took an emphatic victory on Rally Isle of Man this afternoon, over thirty seconds ahead of his Mitsubishi Motors UK team Mate Gwyndaf Evans.
The result moves him ahead of Mark Higgins who crashed on Friday and finished using Super Rally, dropping to third in the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship. "It was a near perfect rally for us," said Wilks at the finish of the 168 mile all asphalt rally, "Apart from an unusual noise that we thought was the differential, we could push at our own pace and managed the rally from the front." The noise was a broken gearbox mount but Wilks was gentle on the transmission until it was resolved, allowing Evans to better him on a few stages.
The Welshman played his team role making a maximum points tally for the Mitsubishi team. "We have been unlucky on previous events so I'm relieved to get the car to the finish on the podium."
Wyn Humphreys was probably the happiest man at the finish though. "To be on the podium with Guy and Gwyndaf in my first season in the BRC is unbelievable," said the amiable Welshman. "We pushed really hard to catch Rob Swann and eventually beat him to the champagne by 0.6 seconds. Taking the lead in the championship is mind blowing but obviously I'm disappointed for Mark (Higgins)" The Stobart TEG Sport team consequently retain the lead in the Teams Championship but Mitsubishi Motors UK have closed the gap to just three points.
Rob Swann was upbeat despite being beaten to third and it is his best result in the British Rally Championship in the privately entered Subaru Impreza. He struggled on Friday with gearbox grumblings, ultimately citing that for the loss of the podium spot.
Nineteen year old Darren Gass took a hatful of awards from the rally. He won the Rally 3 class after Rautenbach and Davis resorted to Super Rally, he was also the fastest Junior driver and most importantly for the youngster, was nominated as the third Pirelli Star Driver. The award will see him join Wilks, George Thomas and another three finalists in a shoot out for a 2008 works drive after Rally GB.
Connor McCloskey was able to put a difficult season on the right tracks with seventh while Swede Andreas Sjolander beat Matt Beebe to the Rally 2 win, the pair finishing seventh and eighth BRC respectively.
Hugh Evans and Lorna Smith finished out the top ten, Evans picking up valuable Teams' points for TQ RED, leaving them third ahead of Smith's Dealer Team Suzuki.
Fin McCaul was the only Diesel Cup contender and his lonely thirteenth place overall was joined by another lone Rally 1 finish by Steve Graham.
Martin Roberts was one of three Citro
