Scot Gordon "Gogsie" Nichol began his involvement in motorsport with National TKM karting and in single seaters, but found rallying in 2004 when he swapped the track for the stage in a Peugeot 205.
The Newtown St Boswells resident's first event was the Granite City Rally as part of the 2004 Ecosse 205 Challenge. It was a short introduction though, the timing belt letting go just over a mile after the start. Two other rallies followed that year, both in the 1600 Peugeot that he and the team built in just twelve weeks from scratch.
After contesting the Autumn Stages with Jane Nicol in 2004, Gordon bought her 205 mid way through 2005 and they joined forces again. They contested selected 205 rounds, but a testing accident before Crail left the pair out for the rest of the season.
His first two seasons were very much learning years, but in 2006 he decided to contest the 205 Challenge with his cousin Rebecca Newington co-driving. After two good results early in the season they badly damaged the car on the Swansea Bay Rally. The Peugeot was duly repaired and with Jane back alongside, they bounced back with another good result on the Premier Rally that year.
Duns born Jane's experience of driving and winning had begun a year before Gordon, when she too campaigned a 205, taking the Ecosse 205 Junior title. After a change to an MGZR in 2007, the pair contested the Jim Clark and Trackrod National Rallies, where Jane's experience as a driver and her skills with the maps helped them win their class on their home event.
After a taste of BRC rallies the pair decided to take the plunge in 2008, considering the C2R2 and Suzuki Swift Sport Cups. The Swift won, and it is in the 1600cc Rally 1 category Suzuki that they will contest the series, determined to use their joint experience of front wheel drive cars on both gravel and asphalt to good effect.
The pair intends contesting at least one event before the Pirelli International rally in April, but they are fired up for the season and obviously are most looking forward to a return to competing on their doorstep, on their home International, the Jim Clark rally.
