Revolution Wheels proves its pace in Ulster
The Revolution Wheels Rally Team once again experienced a rally to forget on last weekends Todd's Leap Ulster Rally, the penultimate round of the 2009 MSA British Rally Championship. Team driver Euan Thorburn had been defending a podium position when a broken driveshaft forced his retirement from the event with three stages left to go.
23 year old Euan and co-driver Campbell Roy had proudly flown the Revolution Wheels flag throughout the two day rally, regularly outpacing the other championship rookies. During the opening leg Thorburn had been well placed in third position when a driveshaft snapped after a heavy landing. The time loss dropped the British Rally Academy member back but a strong push saw the Dunns driver end the opening leg back up in third position.
Changeable weather meant that tyre choice was critical and a cautious start to the second day saw Thorburn drop time on the opening loop. A big push was planned on the longest stage of the rally, the 17 miles of Slieve Gallion, but another broken driveshaft forced the Subaru Impreza N12 off the road and out of the rally!
Team principal Warren McKiernan balanced positive thoughts with remorse by saying Euan impressed once again with a strong pace that had some of the championship regulars playing catch up but it's just unfortunate about the two broken driveshafts. This year has been a very steep learning curve but Euan has taken it all in his stride.
The final round of the 2009 MSA British Rally Championship is the Pickering based International Rally of Yorkshire. Run over one day it is the shortest rally in the calendar but using some of the more infamous Yorkshire forests it is also one of the most challenging events in the calendar.
