Swann takes hard fought fifth in championship

Bishop Stortford based Rob Swann ends the 2007 British Rally Championship with a career best fifth overall after enduring a mixture of adventures en route to finishing fifth amongst the British Rally Championship registered drivers, and 35th overall on last weekends 3 day long Wales Rally GB.

With this years final round split into two different point scoring events Rob was keen to have a good run and was all set to finish fourth overall on Friday, after battling through atrocious weather conditions all day long but when he broke a driveshaft on the start of Stage 4 all the hard work was undone. The Revolution Wheels backed Subaru Impreza N12 dropped around 6 minutes limping through the final 3 stages back to service.

With the clocks reset for Saturdays stages Rob pushed on, knowing that he needed a good run to improve on his championship position. Despite gearbox woes throughout the afternoon stages his times were good and Rob, co-driven by Phwelli resident Darren Garrod, completed the day fourth in class.

Swift work by Geoff Jones Motorsport saw the gearbox replaced with plenty of time to spare and Rob headed out to Sunday's stages aiming to consolidate his position. Once more strong times kept him comfortably in fourth position and he looked set to end the year tied with season long rival Wyn Humphries-- however Lady Luck had not finished with Rob yet. Two punctures in the last two stages cruelly cost the Subaru pilot nearly 2 minutes, demoting him to fifth position once again.

That's twice in this rally that we've had fourth in the BRC in the bag and lost it on the last stage! I think it is a sign of how we've improved this year that I can actually feel disappointed at having missed out on fourth overall in the 2007 championship. It has been a great year, interspersed with disappointment but then that is rallying for you! We'll be back in 2008 much stronger again!

David Meredith in the Revolution Wheels backed Mitsubishi Evo 9 had just as challenging an event and problems in the longest stages of the rally cost the Dolgellau based rally driver precious time. Despite suffering with a damaged steering rack on day 1, and then broken rear suspension on the second leg David showed a good turn of speed, catching up to 3 cars in stage throughout the day! Day 3 went well and apart from a broken drive shaft on the last stage David, co-driven by Dai Roberts, was happy to finish the gruelling marathon rally 61st overall and ninth in class after over 240 miles of tough competition.

David ends his first ever season in a 4 wheel drive rally car tenth overall in the production class in the British Rally Championship.

This was my first time tackling Wales Rally GB and it was a great feeling crossing the finish ramp on Sunday. The conditions were really tough at times and although we had problems throughout the rally both Dai and I really enjoyed this event.
