`Dale Leads S1600 Class'
Pirelli British Rally Championship, Round 2, Wales 18-19th May `02
After a day of preparations for the long awaited second round of the Pirelli British Rally Championship (PBRC), Peugeot filled four of the top-five places after the second stage. Official Peugeot 206 Super 1600 (S1600) works driver Justin Dale set the fastest times in both stages one and two at the first day of the Rally of Wales.
Dale commented; "It's been a great start to the rally setting the quickest times although my gearbox is making a lot of noise. After noticing Gwyndaf Evans with an oil leak I backed off on the final stage, so I am pleased I still set fastest time."
After a meeting with S1600 Team Manager Garry Teams, Dale's gearbox noise was due to the sump plug coming off and oil leaking out, meaning stage two was completed with no oil, which as Dale commented "makes setting the fastest time in stage two even more exciting!"
Less than two seconds separates team-mate Rory Galligan from Dale, who lost 40 seconds on the first stage when he slipped into a ditch and fellow competitors failed to retrieve him. Galligan, who is struggling with flu this weekend commented; "If we hadn't spun on stage one I think we would have got a one-two tonight. We picked up time on stage two though - that stage was much better for us. The brake bias is the same as Pirelli but maybe because the stages are more slippery I'm more sideways to slow down. The notes worked grand but I still can't trust the distances totally."
Peugeot 106 driver Martin Sansom, who finished ahead of fellow 106 driver James Thompson commented; "I enjoyed the stages this evening but it's slippery out there tonight. There is a lot of mud under the trees which is slowing us down a bit."
Touring Car ace James Thompson commented; "I enjoyed stage one today. I didn't like stage two, it was dark and dingy, I think I need to eat more carrots."
Perfect conditions await the team tomorrow where the slight rain has settled the dust. The Super 1600 works team start stage three tomorrow in Hafren, mid Wales with Dale starting the works team off at 7.56am. The classic stages in north and mid Wales form the basis of this gravel leg with over 100 miles of competitive stages with the Service area based at Sweet Lamb in South Wales later in the morning returning there again in the afternoon.
