Leslie earns more points for Team PSP.
David Leslie drove his Team Petronas Syntium Proton Impian to two top-ten places in the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2002 British Touring Car Championship at the demanding and superfast Thruxton circuit today. Leslie's results were earned despite handling problems that prevented him and team-mate Phil Bennett from making the most of their latest specification engines.
David Wong, Team Principal, Team PSP said:"Well done David! This was a tough weekend that proved how much incoming teams have to learn in this challenging series. I know we'll take a lot of valuable information away-- and some more points too."
Race 5-- Sprint:
Leslie started from 15th place after experiencing oversteer in qualifying. He said:"Every race this season is inevitably an important test session as well. With the latest spec engine, we're pushing the chassis much harder and exploring its behaviour more. The Team PSP engineers found a better set-up for me so I was able to move up the order in the race and run competitively." Leslie finished in 9th place, with Phil Bennett in 14th place.
Race 6-- Feature:
With Team PSP once again looking for race mileage and finishes, Leslie started the 30-lap Feature race from 12th on the grid with the Proton Impian race car's balance much more to his liking. He moved up to 9th place during the opening lap, with the safety car's emergence bunching the cars up again. At the resumption of battle, Leslie found himself caught up in a three-car tangle which saw him spin off and rejoin back in 12th place again. As the race progressed and Leslie fought his way through the pack once more, the handling balance gradually changed to bring the Scot more understeer. Despite this, he held on to finish the race in ninth place.
Phil Bennett found the balance of his car's chassis less suited to his driving style but still recorded a best lap a few tenths of a second ahead of his team-mate during the gruelling Feature race. After changing all four tyres during his mandatory pit-stop, his race was run when he went off the circuit and hit Fullalove's Production class car which was already parked in the barrier.
David Leslie said:"I'm pleased to have notched up two more points finishes again, but naturally disappointed that I couldn't make better use at Thruxton of the power we now have. Still, we have to remember this is a learning season for Team PSP and I know we're doing just that. Our database is expanding rapidly and we have a good platform to work with."
