VX Racing's Fabrizio Giovanardi took his ninth win of the season

VX Racing's Fabrizio Giovanardi won a dramatic Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race at Thruxton today, as his two team-mates were blighted by punctures in the dying seconds.

Vauxhall had dominated the race with a 1-2-3 formation right up until lap 15 of the 16-lap race. After setting the fastest lap in the early stages Tom Chilton's tyres were the first to suffer as the 22-year-old ran in second. That meant only Vauxhall's guest driver Alain Menu stood between Giovanardi and his main title rival Jason Plato in third.

In a nail-biting last lap, Menu slowed with a puncture going into the final corner allowing Plato through into second.

The result means the gap between the two title protagonists is now five points, down from nine.

Fabrizio Giovanardi #5 "I must be running the car a little bit lighter maybe, and that's why I didn't get a puncture, but the car felt fairly good.

"I can only win and that's what I've done but with Plato second, it's not an ideal result. It could all change in the next race."

Tom Chilton #7 "I can't believe my bad luck. I was pushing so hard throughout the race and even got fastest lap. I'm very disappointed."

The second race of the day will start at 13:10 at the Hampshire circuit. <pre> BTCC Provisional Round 28 Race Result 1. Fabrizio Giovanardi (Vauxhall Vectra) 2. Jason Plato (SEAT Leon) 3.
