Reigning ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin Champion Phil Glew and Vice-Champion Alex MacDowall will both graduate to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship this season continuing the series' reputation as the most direct link for aspiring Touring Car drivers.

Lincolnshire racer Glew, 26, who dominated the 2009 one-make championship by winning 11 of the 20 rounds, will race for multiple title-winning team Triple Eight Race Engineering while runner-up MacDowall has signed for the factory-supported Silverline Chevrolet team -- meaning they will again be locked in battle in front-running cars.

The signings now mean that eight out of the 23 entries for this year's BTCC are former Clio Cup competitors. Along with Glew and MacDowall, Mat Jackson, Tom Onslow-Cole, Martin Johnson, John George, Lea Wood and Andrew Jordon have all raced in the Clio Cup series which is a prominent support race to the BTCC.

Both championships are now preparing for the opening rounds of the season which take place at Hampshire's Thruxton circuit on 3rd/4th April.

Glew, who will race one of two Vauxhall Vectras in Ian Harrison's squad, said: "It's taken a lot of hard work to get here but I'm delighted to be making the step up into Touring Cars. I had a fantastic year in the Clios in 2009 which without doubt has been a major factor in helping me to secure this drive together with my sponsors WD-40, 3-IN-ONE and Glasurit. Having only driven the BTCC car once though this year is going to be a steep learning curve but I'm looking forward to racing alongside Alex once more."

Eighteen-year-old MacDowall from Carlisle added: "My plan was always to go into Touring Cars and my three years in the Clios has certainly put me in good stead for my debut season. Having someone as experienced as Jason Plato for a team-mate is also a bonus and I'm really looking forward to the start of the season, especially as the car has shown great pace in testing."

Commenting on the news Clio Cup Championship Promoter Simon North said: "We're delighted for both Phil and Alex and to see so many former Clio Cup drivers in the BTCC field. The series is a proven feeder series to the Touring Cars and we hope this year's crop of drivers will also be able to make the step up to BTCC stardom."

The opening rounds of the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin season take place at Thruxton circuit on 3rd/4th April.
