Jack Goff: I can fight for BTCC title

The 24-year-old’s performance during his first race weekend as a factory MG driver belied his relative inexperience, as he finished fourth and ninth in the first two races before coming within two tenths of a second of beating Matt Neal to take a maiden series victory in the finale.

Goff’s consistency places him equal first in the championship with Neal on 37 points, albeit behind on countback.

Asked by Motorsport.com whether he feels he can remain in contention for the title by the time the BTCC returns to Brands in October for its final round, Goff said: “I think so; I don’t see any reason why not.

“I didn’t expect to come away from Brands leading the championship, but we’ve proved this weekend that we can be consistent and that we have the pace to compete with the top guys. The car is proven and it’s quick, so I just need to make sure I get the most out it.”

Poor start was costly

Goff also admitted that a tardy getaway from second on the grid at the start of race three, which crucially saw him drop behind eventual race winner Neal, was to blame for missing out on his first victory.

“I messed up the start – that was the issue,” he said. “Matt got past me, but if I’d have been ahead I would quite easily pulled away. We had the pace, but that Honda is very quick in a straight line.

“We couldn’t mount an attack because we couldn’t get close enough on the straights; we need to improve our straight-line speed somehow, which is something we’ll work on between now and the next round at Donington.”
