Cramp's Consolidation at Sydney's Eastern Creek.
CVW Manta Racing have consolidated their firm position inside the top ten of the Donut King Australian Performance Car Championship points table this weekend, after driver Steve Cramp scored a strong 7th position in today's final 10 lap encounter at the series' third round held at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway.
Today's result backs up the impressive performance shown yesterday, as Cramp charged from the rear of the 18 car field to finish 7th on track. That position was upgraded to 6th overnight thanks to a penalty handed out to another competitor, giving the CVW Engineering VZ HSV Commodore one of it's best finishes of the season.
Today's race started well for the CVW team, Cramp making a solid getaway and moving into fifth place in the early running of the race. Unfortunately, rapid tyre wear caused the car to drop off the pace quickly and slip backwards to an eventual 7th position at the end of 10 laps of the 3.9km Sydney circuit.
And whilst it wasn't the final finishing position that Cramp was hoping for after yesterday's inspired charge through the field, the experienced driver was still able to consolidate the teams' position well inside the top ten contenders on the Championship table.
"We made a good start and got up to 5th place in the early running of the race," explained Cramp after the race this afternoon. "However, after four laps the performance of the Tyres really seemed to drop off and we slipped back down to 7th place.
"Considering we didn't finish the opening race (When the clutch failed at turn 1) it hasn't been a bad weekend for us overall," he said. "We have been able to consolidate our position in the top 10 in the championship and we go from here with a straight car and looking pretty good for the next round at Hidden Valley in Darwin."
Cramp said that the team would run a different tyre to try and tame the expected Hidden Valley heat.
"We will go back to the Pirelli Tyres we have been running so far this season. The car suits them, and because we have been running on them for some time we know how they work and how to get the car setup on them."
Cramp will head into the next round of the championship sitting well inside the top 10, and the HSV driver believes that the track will suit the big and heavy car.
"It's definitely a horsepower track," he said. "The long main straight will definitely suit us very well, and we shouldn't be too bad through the twisty stuff at the back of the track either. We're looking forward to taking the consistency we have been showing up North."
The next round of the Donut King Australian Performance Car Championship will see the CVW Manta Racing HSV Commodore in action at Darwin's Hidden Valley circuit on July 1 - 3, the first time the series' has visited the track at the top end of Australia.
