Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour looks to 2011
THE Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, Australia's longest and toughest track test of performance and production vehicles will return bigger and better in 2011.
Race Promoter James O'Brien said his organisation would review yesterday's fourth event with a view to attracting more competitors and boosting its audience of spectators, television viewers and internet users.
The race was won by the Eastern Creek International Karts team of Garry Holt, John Bowe and Paul Morris, who covered 1254 kilometres through rain, fog and even the obstacle of a fallen tree in the most gruelling 12 Hour to date.
"We'll take a good look at the eligibility rules to see if we can include an even wider diversity of car types, makes and models next year," Mr O'Brien said.
"This year's fourth Bathurst 12 Hour featured around 20 different makes and models and reminded fans of the original production car races that created the Bathurst endurance legend.
Mr O'Brien said that while a three day attendance of almost 18,000 endured uncomfortable weather conditions at Mount Panorama, more than 20,000 around the world followed the race via a successful first-time internet telecast.
Race winner Garry Holt said he would welcome moves to broaden the entry.
"It's a great event. There's BMWs, four wheel drives, front-wheel drives, rear-wheel drive cars and even a diesel in the Alfa Romeo," Holt said.
"You have cars that go 270 kmh down the straight and others that go 200 kmh down the straight, so the variety makes it such a great event.
"With drivers like Bowe, Morris, Seton and Bright you'll start to see (other) names like that here next year if it doesn't clash with Supercars.
"We'll stick with the car (BMW). We'll sort out a few things with it and do the same next year."
The event will be telecast in a 3 hour special on Network Seven, Saturday, 20 March from 1pm 4pm (EDST).
