Hocking wins at windy Wakefield
Hocking Racing Shop's Derek Hocking won the inaugural race in the new era of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, at Wakefield Park, yesterday.
Aboard the Redback Performance Holden Commodore VY SS, Hocking topped the timesheets in the weekend's opening 20 minute practice session with a fastest time of 1:11.0425.
Despite a broken gear lever, Hocking qualified in 3rd place on the grid for the opening race of the weekend. According to Hocking, though, the pace of the car was still evident.
"The car is going very well," Hocking said. "We had a problem with the gear lever, but aside from that, it's all looking very good for the rest of the weekend."
With the gear lever problem rectified, Hocking took to the grid for the opening 10 lap race. In a slight format change from previous years the opening race was a scratch race, and would, when combined with qualifying times, be used to determine the handicapping for the remainder of the weekend.
From the inside of the second row, Hocking made a good startdand was able to move past Drew Russell on the way into turn 1 and slot into 2n place. A brief battle between Hocking and Craig ended at the final corner on the opening lap when the Falcon driver spun at turn 10, allowing Hocking to take the race lead.
From there, it was smooth sailing as Hocking built a lead, set his fastest lap on the second last tour, and took a comfortable race win to kick off his campaign.
`What a way to start the season!" Hocking enthused. "Drew (Russell) made a bad start which I took advantage of, and took 2nd position on the outside. I battled with Craig for first position turn 10 when I was able to take advantage of the mistake and take the lead.
"From then on, I was able to find a groove and look after the car for the rest of the race."
After the success of Saturday, Hocking now turns his attention to Sunday's pair of reverse class handicap format races at the Goulburn circuit.
"Today was good, but there are two more races. I want to come away with an outright win in one of the races, which will put us in good stead for the weekend result."
