Sensational Wakefield weekend for Hocking

With two race wins and a second place finish, Hocking Racing Shop's Derek Hocking has emerged victorious from the opening round of the 2005 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, held at Wakefield Park Raceway, near Goulburn, this weekend.

After taking the win in Saturday afternoon's scratch race aboard the Redback Performance Holden VY Commodore SS, Hocking was out to repeat the success in the day's two handicap, reverse class format races which are a feature of the category.

Based on the times from qualifying and the scratch race, Hocking would start the each of Sunday's 17 lap races from pole position in Class A.

In the opening race of the day, Hocking put the pole position to good use, and quickly asserted himself as the lead driver in Class A and the fastest driver on the circuit, as the Class A drivers closed in on the Class B and C cars.

Quickly cutting into the handicap deficit, the Redback Performance Commodore set the fastest lap of the race (1:10.8009) as he cut through the field. Hocking took the lead on lap 14 from the Proton of Shane Baker and went on to take a comfortable race win.

"Another great race, the Holden didn't miss a beat and we got a good run through the traffic," explained Hocking. "I set out to make a dent in the gap to the small cars early in the race, which I did, and it gave me some time to get through the traffic without taking any risks."

In the third race for the weekend, it was more of the same initially. A good start put Derek at the top of the A Class tree, as he began to close in on and pass the smaller cars, with Drew Russell in tow.

Hocking was able to keep Russell comfortably at bay, until losing 3rd gear. Russell eventually went past Hocking and into the lead of the race on lap 12, leaving Hocking to claim 2nd place finish in the race, and the round win.

"Again, we had good race pace and went through the traffic well, but I couldn't quite hold out that Honda without 3 gear. Regardless, 2nd place gives us the win for the weekend, and championship lead and that's what it's all about.

"We wouldn't be here racing without the hard work of the PCAA and AMRS, so I'd like to thank them all for their efforts.

"Hopefully this weekend is the start of a long and successful period for the category. Roll on Mallala."

Derek Hocking leads the outright Championship and the Class A Championship by 11 points at the conclusion of round 1. The next round of the 2005 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship is at Mallala Raceway, South Australia, on April 16-17.
