CLARK IMPRESSES IN WAKEFIELD QUALIFYING
Optima Sport's David Clark has continued to show impressive speed in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series by qualifying in 16th position at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn, NSW today.
After setting the 11th fastest time during final practice around the 2.2 kilometre circuit Clark continued this form into the 20-minute qualifying session by posting the fourth fastest time on his second flying lap.
Clark's time of 1:01.3173, in just his second V8 Supercar round, ensured the four-time Australian karting champion remained inside the top ten fastest drivers for the majority of qualifying.
The session was halted with six-minutes remaining when Michael Caruso's car stopped on the circuit which provided the Optima Sport team with an opportunity to fit a new set of tyres on Clark's Falcon. At this point his fastest time had him positioned as 11th fastest.
While he improved his fastest time on his second-last flying lap by one-tenth of a second Clark was unable at cement a position inside the top ten and will start tomorrow's opening 17-lap race from 16th in the capacity 36-car field.
"All day the team continued to improve the set up on the Optima Sport Falcon and as a consequence my lap times have improved but there is still a lot of improvement to come," said Clark.
"Our aim was to qualify inside the top ten but we didn't quite make it. We had an issue with a leaking radiator hose this morning which basically ruined our opening practice session and meant we were playing catch up for most of the day.
"We have a problem with the brakes which is making the car very unstable entering the corners, if we can get on top of this I'm confident of being inside the top ten tomorrow."
Team Owner Dave Macdougall was relatively pleased with today's qualifying result but like Clark believes there will be further improvement tomorrow.
"We were very good during the first half of qualifying but seemed to drop out of the set up "window" in the second half," said Macdougall.
"The team will be studying the data tonight to see where we went wrong and hopefully engineer some speed back into the Optima Sport Falcon tomorrow to put the car in a position where it deserves to be."
Series leader Adam Macrow qualified on pole position ahead of Mark Porter and Jay Verdnik.
