ADELAIDE CONFIDENCE BOOSTER FOR DECINA RACING
Speed FX/Decina Racing has confidently entered the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, putting together a solid performance during the opening two practice sessions of Adelaide's Clipsal 500.
Rookie driver Michael Caruso maintained a steady approach on day one, yet managed to place the Decina Falcon as high as third before settling into 11th place on the timesheets.
For the bulk of proceedings the 22 year-old found himself jockeying in or around the top five and remained consistently quick throughout.
This ensured the team goal from today's outing was achieved with ease and provides a good lead in to tomorrow morning's all important 20 minute qualifying session.
"Being well placed during both sessions allowed us to try a few things which are sure to benefit us come race time," confirmed Caruso.
"When we made the changes you could feel the difference.
"I'm really getting a good handle on the set-up.
"It's always a boost when you can feel so comfortable in a new car right from the start.
"Things are becoming second nature so there's no reason we can't continue to improve.
"Qualifying is extremely important here so you don't get caught out in all the jostling up the middle so we'll switch on tomorrow morning and count on a good result."
Adelaide is proving the ideal feeler event for Caruso into V8 Supercar competiton during his inaugural full season.
Speed FX/Decina Racing team boss Jim Morton was impressed with his young charge, particularly the maturity shown late in the final session.
"Michael used his discretion after oil had leaked onto the track and didn't do anything stupid trying to chase times," said Morton.
"He just kept his head and continued to feel his way around the car and the track knowing full well there's a lot more to do this weekend.
"All in all it's been good so far and we're confident Michael will do the job in the Decina Falcon.
"Patience is the key for us and together the team is pulling together to give Michael the best possible chance come race time."
Holden's Mark Porter and Kane Scott were the best performed drivers today with Ford campaigner Adam Macrow rounding out the top three.
Qualifying for Fujitsu V8 Supercars begins at 11.15am tomorrow and will precede the first of two 24-lap races set down for 6.35pm. The program will finish on Saturday with the second race at 9.50am.
