LUFF QUALIFIES THIRD AT EASTERN CREEK

Decina Racing's Warren Luff will start on the second row of the grid at Eastern Creek after qualifying third for race one of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series third round.

The 2004 V8 Supercar Rookie of the Year ran strongly during the opening practice sessions, finishing the first session with a time of 1:34.81, just 0.02 of a second behind eventual pole winner Dean Canto.

The second practice saw Luff clock a 1:33.88 to finish third behind fellow Ford drivers Canto and Adam Macrow, and go into the qualifying session confident of putting his Decina BA Falcon on the front row.

However, the opening minutes of qualifying were hampered with rain, leaving Luff and the other drivers in the Top 50 percent qualifying bracket battling the conditions.

"Unfortunately with the changing weather patterns during qualifying we only got a few decent laps right towards the end and all the time battling through traffic," said Luff.

Luff eventually qualified third behind Canto and Macrow who claimed the two front-row spots for race one.

"To be third is not too bad, however we are always looking to be on the front row and we will have our work cut out for us tomorrow," said Luff.

The Decina Racing driver did, however make the point that sometimes at Eastern Creek it can be an advantage starting from third.

"You can get an advantage being third here because you have the inside run down into turn one and then into turn two," said Luff.

"So the plan for tomorrow is to get a good start and see which of the guys, if not both of them, that we can get past and then it really is a case of staying out of trouble and aiming towards getting points for the championship and trying to finish in front of Dean and Adam.

Luff's teammate, Phil Scifleet qualified in sixth position aboard his Paul Cruickshank Racing prepared Doric Falcon.

According to Luff, the Decina Falcon has the speed and balance to fight for the round win.

"We have a few things we will work on between now and race one as you are always trying to improve the car," said Luff.

"However, the general balance of the car was good, and I am confident going into the first race that we can aim for a podium this weekend."

Decina Racing team boss Jim Morton was pleased with the overall performance of the car during the practice and qualifying sessions and is also confident that the team is headed for a good result this weekend at Eastern Creek.

"We have had pretty good pace right throughout so we were pretty happy with both the practice sessions and went into the qualifying with good expectations, but we just got pipped.

"But we are in third and a few tenths off the DJR car and there is very little between us and the Howard Racing car, so I think it will make for good racing tomorrow.

"However, I just hope that we will have dry weather.

Rain has been forecast for Sydney throughout the day.

Tomorrow's first race begins at 10.30am and is 12 laps. The second "reverse grid" format is 22 laps and starts at 12.45pm with the third and final 22 lap race starting at 3pm and will complete the third round of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series.
