LUFF MOVES UP THE CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS
Decina Racing's Warren Luff has fought his way back into championship contention after finishing equal first on points at Round 2 of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series at Wakefield Park today.
Luff finished on equal points with Adam Macrow, who won the final race of the day to claim the round on a count back due to his higher finishing position in the final event.
After qualifying fourth yesterday Luff started the day with a strong second aboard his Decina Racing Falcon behind Dean Canto in the opening 17-lap race to put himself in a strong position for the reverse grid race two.
The start of race two was marred by an enormous accident when Jay Verdnik stalled on the grid. Canto was unable to avoid him and slammed into the back of Verdnik's Commodore.
At the restart Luff showed genuine race pace and a mature approach to carve his way through the field to finish in eighth and putting himself at the front of the grid for the 30 lap race three.
A strong start saw Luff pull away during the opening laps of the third and final race before he ran wide on lap six and lost the lead to Macrow. Luff was unable to recover the position over the next 24 laps and crossed the line in second.
Luff's strong weekend result has elevated him up the Championship order to fifth, a mere 42 points behind Championship leader Macrow.
"From a Championship perspective I am much happier and now it is just a case off continually scoring good points for the rest of the season and getting back to the front of the championship," said Luff.
"The car was good all day but I made a small error in the final race that allowed Adam (Macrow) through and from there I couldn't match his speed.
PCR team principal Paul Cruickshank was happy to see the team move inside the top five in the Championship.
"It's been a pretty good weekend. We came to Wakefield with the objective to close the gap from where we were to first in the championship and we have achieved that," said Cruickshank
"W are now only 42 points behind the Championship leader, so from that perspective it's been a good weekend. The team operated well but we still need to find a little more speed in the car."
Decina Racing Team Manager Jim Morton echoed Cruickshank's thoughts "Although we would have liked to have won the last race and ultimately the round we are satisfied with the equal top points for the weekend."
"Our focus now turns to the third round at Eastern Creek with the aim of climbing further up the Championship standings."
The next round of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series will be held at Sydney's Eastern Creek circuit on July 8-10.
