DECINA DETERMINED TO GO ONE BETTER

Confidence reigns in the Speed FX/Decina Racing camp after an 80-lap test session at Goulburn's Wakefield Park netted the perfect lead in to the upcoming second round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series on May 26-28.

Collaroy based driver Michael Caruso fully appreciated a further stint behind the wheel of the Decina Falcon, the first since his emphatic second placed performance at Adelaide's Clipsal 500 in late March.

With their test track the venue for the next assignment in the team's quest for a maiden V8 Supercar title, all at Speed FX Racing are relaxed and at ease with how everything is shaping up.

"The one thing that I've been worried about was the lengthy layoff between Championship rounds, but that's all been swept aside with our performance in testing," confirmed Caruso.

"Our lap times were actually a second quicker than the last time we tested before Adelaide and that's particularly positive because the track conditions weren't nearly as good this time around.

"I think we've found a good balance with the Decina Falcon and I feel more comfortable in the car. That's an important factor as everything will continue to become second nature and that's bound to show in our future performances."

Team boss Jim Morton and Chief Engineer Ron Tauranac didn't waste the opportunity to gain valuable data from the recent outing.

The car's Stone Brothers Racing prepared engine will be thoroughly checked over prior to race weekend, where it's expected New South Wales' number one V8 Supercar team will be firing on all cylinders.

"The test was relatively uneventful which is a good thing, we bedded in new brakes for the next round and tried a few different things and we're totally comfortable leading into Wakefield Park," said Morton.

"Most importantly Michael was able to accrue more valuable seat time which was the major part of the exercise.

"He has scant experience in V8 Supercars and for the team as a whole it was just good to get together and learn more about the car.

"Ron had the chance to play around a little with the set-up and fine tune a few areas, where I'm sure we'll see some gains in a few weeks time.

"We've been fortunate we came back from Clipsal with a clean car and now with more miles clocked up for our driver and the team we are all looking forward to race day."

The way the points system works in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series consistency remains the key to victory.

While Caruso was happy to come away from Adelaide with a clean slate he's not about to rest on his laurels.

The 22 year-old is especially looking forward to his first experience under the reverse grid format, which will prove yet another valuable stage in his development.

"I want to go one better, that's the goal at Wakefield Park.

"It's my home track which makes me even more motivated to go well, particularly as a lot of my family and friends will be along to support us.

"I'm definitely more confident leading into this round.

"It's helped getting back in the car and now we've just got to look to consolidate all that by nailing down some good results."

The Wakefield Park round on May 26-28 will feature a three race format with the second starting from a reverse grid.
