Evangelou to debut in ex-FPR Falcon at Clipsal
When Tony Evangelou contests the opening round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series this weekend at the famous Adelaide Parklands street circuit, it will signal his fourth year in the feeder V8 category. In each season, Evangelou has sported a new car, but never before has Evangelou fronted to the end of pit lane with such a quality piece of his machinery.
Dexion Racing's Evangelou will contest the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Series with Jason Bright's ex-Ford Performance Racing Ford Falcon BA. Evangelou will make his Adelaide track debut in the car today (Thursday), and after a short hit-out at Winton Raceway two weeks ago, the Victorian feels confident he has given himself the best chance to run with the leaders over the course of the year.
"The Fujitsu category has lifted again over the off-season, so if we are in the top 10, its not a bad achievement," Evangelou said. "We want to push into the top three rows, for sure, but to start with, I want to concentrate on getting the basics right."
The acquisition of the factory-spec Falcon comes with engine support, ensuring the Dexion Ford will never lack the top pace of the Level 1 teams and cars littered throughout the Fujitsu Series.
"I'm sure our team will learn a hell of a lot this year," Evangelou said. "New cars can be tricky to get the team's head around sometimes, but the support we've received so far from FPR has been encouraging. They've got a busy schedule but have delivered on everything they've promised.
"In terms of car speed, our test day at Winton didn't prove much as it was wet for most of it and we didn't have the right tyres. The car felt good, a lot better than our old car. It is more refined, and the engine performance is great. I have a few things to sort out to make it suit my style, but that is something that will take time."
Commenting on the depth of competition in this year's Fujitsu Series, Evangelou rates any number of drivers capable of taking the 2006 crown.
"There's probably 6-7 unknowns," he quipped. "The two Smiths Trucks cars will be fast, as will Adam Macrow. "Jack Perkins tested really well the other day, but we'll see how some of the inexperienced drivers mix in and cope with the pressure. There are some unknowns out there with really good equipment, so I guess it will be exciting season. Clipsal is a daunting sort of place to start off, but every driver loves racing there. It's got it's own charm.
"We won't be holding back. We've put the pressure on ourselves with the new car so we want to deliver the goods."
Fujitsu V8 Supercars hit the track for the first time this morning (9.45am) followed by another practice in the afternoon (2.10pm).
