Dexion seventh at wild Mallala
Dexion Racing and Tony Evangleou have secured their best overall position in the HPDC V8 Supercar Series with seventh at Mallala Motorsport Park today.
Evangelou qualified his Dexion Ford Falcon BA in 15th place, but stayed out of trouble in three fraught races to finish ninth, 10th and 10th at the South Australian track.
"After a bad start to the weekend, we've ended up alright," Evangelou said. "It's our best overall finish in a championship round, and not only that, we've come away with a straight car, unlike some of the other drivers and teams.
"I missed it all!" he said. "We hardly got a scratch, only a small one on one of our rear panels. It's nice to have luck go your way sometimes."
Evangelou struggled in qualifying, claiming that his current engine just doesn't have the horsepower of the leading contenders.
His frown turned upside down in Race 1, when a number of incidents, plus some smart driving, saw the red and white Ford claim ninth place. Evangelou had a good, fair dice with the Grants (Denyer and Elliott). Race 2 saw more incidents unfold, including a nasty clash between Adam Macrow and Tony D'Alberto. Mark Porter and Mark Howard were also involved in heavy hits.
The team had made some set-up changes for Race 2, hoping that the car would be more consistent in the tight reverse grid race. The changes made were not effective though until the mid-portion of the race. Evangelou dropped to the tail of the field early, but the car improved as the race wore on and he finished in 10th place. The race finished under Safety Car conditions.
In Race 3, Evangelou started from eighth and ran with the front-runners for the first few tours.
"The car felt really good in the opening laps of the third race," he said with a grin. "On cold tyres, our car was quick, if not quicker that some of the blocks in front of us. We slowly fell away from them, but still held our own. I was really impressed with the way the weekend panned out. The team did a top job and I'm now looking forward to the last two rounds of the year at Bathurst and Phillip Island."
Dick Johnson Racing driver Dean Canto won the round and retook the series lead. Channel 7 weatherman Grant Denyer finished second overall in front of Phillip Scifleet.
Before Evangelou gets a chance to race his Dexion Ford again, the Melbourne resident will partner Anthony Tratt in the V8 Supercar endurance races in the Betta Electrical Sandown 500 and the Super Cheap Autos 1000 at Mout Panorama, Bathurst.
The next round of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series supports the famous Bathurst 1000 event between October 6-9.
