Howard Racing second at Winton after Race 3 revival
After failing to collect points in today's rain affected opening Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series race, the Howard Racing team has fought back, with Andrew Thompson winning Race 3 and finishing second overall for the round.
Teammates Adam Sharpe and Mark Howard also resurrected their results with Sharpe finishing 13th to give him 11th overall and Howard 17th after a broken radiator put him out of Race 2 and to the back of the grid for Race 3.
Despite not scoring any points in Race 2, Thompson collected maximum points in Race's 1 and 3 to claim second on the podium and move to fifth in the championship.
"We came away today with a good result considering we didn't score a point in Race 2," said Thompson.
"We have not raced this car in the wet before and we just didn't get the setup right for the second race. It wouldn't turn in and was really difficult to drive but at least we know what to do next time."
"I had a great third race, the car was perfect and I was able to get to the front quite quickly," Thompson added.
Adam Sharpe was on song for a good result in his Winton debut but an incident in Race 2 while he was in third place relegated the 22-year old down the order. Sharpe crossed the chequered flag in 20th position
Sharpe finished 13th in the final race of the day and said he was disappointed not to be further up the order.
"Race two was very disappointing as I got a really good start and had moved from sixth to third," said Sharpe.
"Once I was hit there was nothing I could as there was quite a bit of rear end damage."
"I had a problem with my clutch at the start of Race three and but we fought back hard and managed to get the car back in the points which was encouraging," he explained.
Sharpe now heads back to the UK in between Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series rounds to prepare for the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in three weeks time.
Team Principal Mark Howard endured a day of mixed results after a broken radiator put him out of contention in Race 2.
With the radiator replaced Howard started Race 3 from the back of the 36 car grid and worked hard to get his #37 How Financial Falcon back up to 17th position.
"We really did have mixed weekend," Howard said. "After such good results in Race 1 we went from hero to zero in Race 2 after all three cars finished outside the points."
"The Team did a fantastic job to get both my car and Adam's back out for Race 3 and we made a reasonable comeback from the back of the grid."
"I am very pleased with Andrew he put the team back on the podium and if it wasn't for Adam being T-boned in Race 2 we could of being looking at two cars on the podium." Howard continued.
The Fujitsu V8 Supercars will now enjoy a lengthy break until Round 4 of the series at Queensland Raceway July 20-22.
