MCNALLY BREAKS INTO THE TOP TEN AT WAKEFIELD
Mark McNally forged his way into a top-ten result in the final race at Wakefield Park today after bouncing back from being turned around in Race two.
After qualifying 15th yesterday, and finishing tenth in the opening race, Mark started the reverse top-10 Race 2 from grid 1. As the race got underway Mark settled into third position as he waited for his set-up to 'come-on'.
Unfortunately he was hit and turned around in an ambitious passing move by Chris Alajajian at the end of the back straight.
"I didn't get the best of starts and lost a few places off the line," Mark said.
"My set-up was just starting to come good and I was closing in on the guys in front."
"Then I was hit and turned around; It was pretty disappointing and it cost me a lot of places but I just had to get on with the job."
Mark dropped down to just inside the top 20 but pressed on to finish 15th, which is the last points-scoring place.
In Race 3 Mark started from grid 11 and after losing a few places at the start settled into a good rhythm slowly working his way up to 10th place at the finish.
"Looking back, we made some changes to the set-up for the final race that didn't really work the way we hoped," Mark said.
"It was one of those weekends that could have worked out a lot better but ended up ok considering what happened in Race 2."
Earlier, in Race 1, Mark drove a solid race to work from 15th to 10th position.
"I decided to make sure I didn't make any moves that could cost me, it was important to finish that one.
"I ended up 10th which gave me grid 1 for the reverse top-10.
This round marked a full season of competition in V8 Supercars for Mark, as he only joined the series in Round 3 last year.
Each track from now on will be one that Mark has raced a V8 Supercar on before.
"It will be good to race on tracks that I know from now on," Mark said.
"I am really looking forward to racing next round at Winton, our test track."
For many drivers it is taken for granted that they can easily test and compete at different tracks on the eastern seaboard of Australia but for Mark, traveling from Perth has made it difficult for him to get track-time away from his local Barbagallo Raceway.
"I am doing all my learning in the public arena which makes it a little difficult at times, but now that I have one season under my belt I can't wait for the rest of the season," he said.
Mark has now moved up to 14th in Series points.
The next round of the Series will be at the team's test track, Victoria's Winton Raceway 0n 18-20 May.
