AUSTRALIAN MOTOR RACING SERIES -- KEEP ON TRUCKING
The Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) heads to Winton Motor Raceway in rural Victoria this weekend the 30th April -- 1st May 2005, for the combined on track action of the Australian Truck Nationals and AMRS categories.
Porsche 944 Challenge, Improved Production Racing Association Victoria, Sports/GT Intermarque Challenge and Formula Vee will provide support to the opening round of the Australian Truck Nationals by supplying exciting racing whilst enjoying the exposure that only a National series can provide.
Leading the charge for the AMRS this weekend will be the Intermarque Cup which will see some terrific cars returning to Winton including the favoured Porsche GT 2 R of NSW David Stevens. Expecting to take it up to Dave will be the Porsche GT 3 R of Mark Eddy, GT 3 Cup car of Matt Turnbull and another interesting car in the Saker GT driven by Luke Youlden. Powered by Subaru WRX and never seen in competition in Victoria it is extremely light and it will be interesting to see how it performs.
Over the course of 2005 the AMRS has expanded its repertoire of categories by signing Porsche 944 Challenge, Improved Production Racing Association Victoria, Intermarque Challenge and Formula Vee to the series.
One of the more interesting battles over the weekend will be between the Rose boys in the aPorschaPart 944 Challenge as they fight with fellow youngster Sam Abay for top dog points. Trailing them on equal points is Steve Canny and John Morriss and Dennis O'Keefe founder was heard to say that "it's to be noted that the sum total of the 'kids' ages (Rose, Abay and Rose) is probably less than 'old man' Morriss's age". That might just be enough to rev up Morriss!
aPorschaPart 944 Challenge point scoring: 1/ Brent Rose 149 points, 2/ Sam Abay 147, 3/ Kane Rose 142, 4/ John Morriss 127 4/ Steve Canny 127, 5/ Robert Lange 123.
Improved Production make their long awaited return to the challenging Winton layout with a quality field expected with the action not limited to the outright cars but with many battles for class honours taking place throughout the entire field. With current state Champion Tony Skinner in the 2.4 litre Datsun trying to fend off the V8's of previous state champions Tony Floreani (Commodore) and Paul Rule (Torana) close behind it might be up to the more nibble RX7's to fight their way through the pack if the conditions are less than perfect.
IP cars are essentially modified road cars intended for race track use. They are made popular by the fact that they are fast and relatively inexpensive and they can be likened to the old Group C Touring cars except they have a lot more power and a lot less rubber on the ground. >From a driver's point of view they can be a real handful with some of the top V8's producing around 600 horsepower, while the top Mazda Rotaries are making horsepower that Allan Moffat only dreamed about.
The Formula Vee brigade will also make the trip with a strong field of racers determined to tame the Winton circuit will it be up to Brett Maclennan and George Panagiotidis to defend the 1200 honours against the 1600's of Trent Ulmer leading the point score over Asher Johnson and David Frith.
Super Truck racing is generally one of the most exciting events on the Winton Calender, with Super Trucks and light trucks fighting for position as they muscle their way around each other to pass on the tight Winton layout. It is common to see Trucks going two or even three wide through some corners at astonishingly quick and entertaining speeds.
The AMRS mission statement is simple: To facilitate, organise and promote National Motor Racing events to the highest standard with the welfare and investment of all competitors, event promoters and spectators in mind at all times, and by combining with the trucks at Winton we believe we have done this.
With Mallala tucked under the AMRS belt and Winton now only days away little time will be spent reflecting the achievements so far with round four at Phillip Island only three weeks away on the 21st -- 22nd May.
The team at Winton, together with the AMRS have put together an entertaining package for all spectators during this weekends opening round of the Super Truck Nationals and AMRS round, so for those of you who have never seen truck racing -- come along because it must be seen to be believed.
All interested spectators and competitors can log onto Winton Motor Raceway's website at www.wintonraceway.com.au or the AMRS website www.amrs.net.au for more information about the Winton event and coming rounds.
