LEITZINGER TO LEAD CAN-AM FIELD AT HOMESTEAD

HOMESTEAD, Fla. Butch Leitzinger, of State College, Pa., captured his first-career Can-Am pole at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex for the United States Road Racing Championship's Sports Car Extravaganza, Round Two of the Can-Am and GT Championships..

Leitzinger, who will team with England's James Weaver, wheeled the No. 16 Goodyear/Safety Glow Ford Riley & Scott to a lap of 1:15.178 (105.82 mph). Starting second for the two hour, 15-minute race will be Leitzinger's teammates, Dorsey Schroeder, of Little Torch Key, Fla., and Elliott Forbes Robinson, of Sherrils Ford, N.C. Schroeder turned a best lap of 1:16.060 (104.60 mph) in the No. 20 Goodyear/Safety Glow Ford Riley & Scott.

"My teammate, James, set the car up this morning and I thought we'd do a 1:15.8," said Leitzinger. "I was pleasantly surprised to go 15.1. For the race, you've got the Riley & Scotts, Ferraris, Panoz and the Porsche. It's gonna be quite a race."

Starting third will be the Rolex 24-winning No. 30 MOMO Ferrari 333 SP of Mauro Baldi, of Monaco, and Gianpiero Moretti, of Italy with a best lap of 1:16.145 (104.48 mph), followed by the leading GT1 car the No. 4 Visteon-Elan Natural Waters Panoz GTR of Great Britain's Andy Wallace and Doc Bundy, of Brasleton, Ga. Wallace turned a fastest lap of 1:16.237 (104.35 mph).

"The run was quite exciting and I caught some traffic," said Wallace. "Overall, we're very happy with the car. The organizers say we all have to do three stops, which makes it interesting and an even race between the Can-Am and GT1 cars."

Second in GT1 was the No. 38 Champion Porsche 911 GT1 of Belgian Thierry Boutsen and Pierre Raphanel, of France, with a lap of 1:17.967 (102.04 mph), good enough for seventh overall.

BMWs took the pole in both GT2 and GT3, with Andy Pilgrim, of Cooper City, Fla. taking GT2 honors in the No. 54 Bell Motorsports BMW M3 and Boris Said III, of Carlsbad, Calif., taking the GT3 pole in the No. 10 Yokohama/Fina BMW M3.
