BFGoodrich heads for Siberia
The second edition of the Rallye Transsyberia will run from July 11 until July 25, 2008, via a route of more than 7,000km stretching between Moscow and the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator. The American tyre brand BFGoodrich will be a partner of the specially-prepared Porsche Cayenne Ss entered for this unique competition.
After conquering the dusty trails of the American continent, traversing the sands of northwest Africa and triumphing in Europe's top all-terrain competitions, BFGoodrich is to turn its attention to the challenge of the Siberian taiga and the Mongolian Steppe.
Organised for the first time in 2007, the Rallye Transsyberia is open to production 4x4 vehicles which have been specifically reinforced to soak up the punishing terrain and conditions. The inaugural event was won by famed New Zealand rally driver and former winner of the USA's Pikes Peak hill -climb, Rod Millen, in a Porsche Cayenne S.
This year again, the German carmaker will be out in force with a field of 20 or so Porsche Cayenne Ss when the rally sets off from in front of the Kremlin on July 11. All these cars will contest the event on BFGoodrich All-Terrain 265/65 R18 R tyres, a product acclaimed for its strength and performance both on-road and over the planet's most gruelling tracks.
"We are delighted and proud to be associated with such a prestigious brand as Porsche on this adventure. It promises to a difficult but also very exciting two weeks," says BFGoodrich Competition Director Frederic Henry -Biabaud. "The strength and ability of BFGoodrich's tyres combined with the qualities of the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia will be a major asset across the wide open spaces of Siberia en route to Ulan Bator."
The Rallye Transsyberia 2008 will start from Moscow's Red Square on July 11 before heading east across the Ural Mountains. Competitors will consequently skirt the border with Kazakhstan to Siberia's principal city, Novosibirsk. Following a rest-day in Olgii, Mongolia, they will then tackle the Mongolian Steppe to the finish in Ulan Bator.
The 7,000km route is divided into 14 legs and the provisional entry list already features some 30 crews, including two familiar names from world class rallying - Armin Schwarz and Martin Rowe - and the winner of the Marathon category of the 2006 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup, Frenchman Christian Lavieille.
