ABSA helps Sunfield Homes charity

ABSA OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITORS RAISE MORE THAN R90 000 FOR CHARITY

Competitors in the Absa Off Road Championship outdid themselves over the weekend when they raised in excess of R90 000 for Sunfield Homes.

The off road fraternity, as has been the case for more than 20 years, played host to kids from Sunfield Homes at Tarlton International Raceway to raise funds for children who suffer from Downs Syndrome. This year 160 children from Sunfield Home were again treated to a day to remember after the RFS Magalies 400, the final event of the Absa Off Road Championship.

The children were given rides over a four kilometre course in vehicles made available by individuals and teams competing in the Absa Off Road Championship. After lunch the kids were then treated to a puppet show and were then entertained by a magician.

But the highlight of the day was a visit from Father Christmas with every child going home with a present.

The day was again organised in conjunction with the Rotary Merlins Club based in Roodepoort, and this year a contingent from the Harley Davidson Club added a new dimension to the event. The focus was again on raising funds to build a frail care centre at Sunfield Homes with surplus funds donated to Logwood Ranch.

"Over the years we have had incredible support from the off road community to help children and older people less fortunate than ourselves," said South African Off Road Car Racing Association chairman Richard Schilling. "This year our members reached new heights of generosity, and it was an emotional day that was filled with fun and laughter for the children.

"It was also a pleasant surprise to have members of the Harley Davidson Club join us, and we look forward to working with them in the future."

Schilling added the Sunfield Christmas Party was now firmly entrenched on the Absa Off Road Championship calendar. The event will next year celebrate its 23rd birthday.
