Scott Hogan Wins Charity Cup at Benton County Speedway
September 18, 2004 - (VINTON, IA) - - Scott Hogan charged through the field to take the win in RaceRPM.com's 2nd annual Charity Cup at Benton County Speedway. Starting seventeenth, Hogan took the lead on lap twenty-two, and he held off charges from Don Erger, Charlie McKenna, and Dave Stricker.
Hogan surprised race fans while in victory lane. "I'm going to donate $400 of tonight's winnings to the American Cancer Society," Hogan told the crowd.
With the $400 from Scott Hogan's win of the Ferring Homes A-Main, RaceRPM.com's Charity Cup raised $1,400 for the American Cancer Society, the charity of choice for this year's Charity Cup.
Early race leader Steve Ricks looked strong at the drop of the green flag until the left rear brake line came loose. Ricks was force to retire shortly after collect the RaceRPM.com's "Halfway Leader" bonus.
Don Erger moved into the lead when Ricks pulled into the pits. Hogan and Charlie McKenna placed heavy pressure on Erger for the lead. Dave Stricker started fourth, but slipped back early. Stricker stayed steady and moved back to the front pack and ran just behind the lead battle.
A restart with four laps remaining shuffled the top 4. Hogan took the win and the Sub City "Hardcharger" bonus. Erger finished second followed by Stricker and McKenna. Jeff Morris rounded out the Top Five. Morris started sixteenth, and slowly worked his way to the front.
Heat race wins went to Steve Ricks, Charlie McKenna, Patrick Flanigan, and Don Erger.
