DT AND THE BRDC RUNNERS RAISE THOUSANDS FOR CLIC SARGENT
Darren Turner and the BRDC boys have raised an astonishing £80,000 for CLIC Sargent, thanks to their efforts in and around yesterday's Virgin London Marathon. This was Darren's second London Marathon and he finished it in a time of four hours and 14 minutes, just two minutes shy of his 2009 time, which he puts down to an unscheduled pit stop for damage repairs.
"I managed to get a blister just three miles into the run," he said. "It wasn't just any old blister either as it even made the medic I saw afterwards wince! To start with I ignored it and kept going but at the 15-mile mark I was seriously considering calling it a day. Luckily Oliver Gavin had given me a bit of a heads up and suggested I take something with me to fix blisters, effectively a puncture repair kit for humans. I was starting to get pain all over the place as I wasn't putting weight on my foot properly so I stopped, patched myself up, and managed to make it to the end somehow."
The aim of the run was to raise £50,000 for CLIC Sargent and, in addition to online sponsorship, the drivers all attended a charity lunch on Friday where tens of thousands of pounds were raised in an auction.
"The most important thing is that we raised a lot of money for CLIC Sargent," said Darren. "I would like to thank Martin Whitmarsh at McLaren for donating a tour of the McLaren Technology Centre. This alone raised £6,500. My guests at the lunch were incredibly generous with their bids. I won't embarrass them by giving details but I am proud to be associated with them all."
This was Darren's second marathon so the question now is will he do it again next year?
"I doubt that very much!", he said. "It's a good job I don't have to make a living out of running marathons as the damage it does to my feet is horrendous. I'm pleased to have done it as it is a real achievement. I wanted to get under the four-hour mark but I just don't think it's my sport. Thank you to Adidas for the great kit they supplied me with; maybe I'll use it to do a few half marathons each year instead of the one big one."
