Cheerios Race For Books Reaches Finish Line: Labonte, Cheerios Team Complete Season by Earning More Than 425,000 Books for Children in Need

Homestead, Fla. (November 18, 2007) -- The 2007 racing season ended happily-ever-after for Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team -- as well as for thousands of children in race markets across the country. That's because Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories® and nonprofit partner First Book® challenged Labonte and team to a "Race for Books" -- that for every lap the #43 car completed during the 2007 season, Cheerios and First Book would donate 43 books to disadvantaged children. Labonte and his team succeeded in raising a total of 434,687 books this season and raised awareness of the importance of reading and putting books into the hands of children and families.

The Race for Books began February 18 in Daytona Beach (Fla.) and concluded this weekend with the season-finale race at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway. Reaching their goal of raising more than 400,000 books was a direct result of the performance of Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team. The 2007 race schedule included 36 races. The team completed 10,109 laps out of a possible 10,582, an impressive 95 percent of laps completed.

Being a father of two, Labonte has a strong understanding of the importance of reading.

"Reading is so important to a child's life," said Labonte. "I'm a racer, but I'm a parent first. It's humbling to know that through racing, and our on-track efforts, we have raised so many books for children in need. Meeting our goal means more than 425,000 books will find their way into homes that otherwise might not have them. I'm proud to be a part of the Spoonfuls of Stories program and this Race for Books."

Labonte and the #43 Cheerios team have been involved in the Spoonfuls of Stories program the past two race seasons. This is the first season the Race for Books continued season-long. More than half a million books have gone to kids through their efforts over the past two years.
