Kevin Lacombe -- Front row starts in Pro 600 and Superbike
Pascal Picotte -- Second row in both classes
Not perfect, but we are working on that!
Mosport, July 14, 2006. Friday-only qualifying places both "Team Toyota Yamaha Racing" riders a few tenths of a second behind pole position, in hotly contested qualifying sessions run in 30oC heat and high humidity.
Kevin Lacombe is on the front row for both classes, and will continue to work on his set-up on both machines to close that small gap to the leaders. He must also manage the wear on the tire over each race distance. "The long high-speed corners at Mosport place unusually heavy loads on the sides of the tire patch, especially on the right one, as this track has 5 fast right turns per lap as opposed to only 3 such turns to the left. I must set up the bikes and ride them in such a way as to make sure that I still have the traction I need to stay in front at the end of each race. After all, winning is the idea and I am looking for more after winning the Pro 600 race at Calgary two weeks ago."
Pascal Picotte will start 4th in Pro 600, a bare 0.1 sec slower than Kevin's time, and will take off 5th in Superbike, less than a second off pole time. Pascal agrees with Kevin that tire management over the length of the race is a key to winning. "I really felt the tires go off over the length of the qualifying sessions, and will work in the Saturday warmup to make the bikes more gentle on the tires. I must ensure that I have the traction I need at the end of the races, especially with the long back straight where it is too easy for someone to slipstream by."
The Pro 600 Sporbike is very tight, and both riders are still in the championship hunt just behind the leaders. Pascal feels it is too early to start playing the "points" game right now. "Kevin and I are both starting near the front and are capable of winning the race, so we will both chase after the best possible result. Our team will then analyze the results on Saturday nigh, and then decide if we need to adjust our strategy for Sunday."
Both classes will hold finals on Saturday and then again on Sunday, July 15 and Sunday July 16.
