Happy Sunday - Lacombe wins Pro 600 and finishes 3rd in Superbike.
Picotte nabs 6th in Pro 600 and 5th in Superbike.
Calgary, July 2, 2006. Kevin Lacombe had his best week-end so far in 2006, dominating in Pro 600 Sportbike and netting a fighting 3rd in Superbike, climbing back from around 10th after the first lap. Pascal Picotte also had an encouraging weekend despite being slowed by nagging injuries suffered in pre season testing, with a 6th in Pro 600 and a courageous 4th in Superbike.
Kevin's Pro 600 victory is a logical evolution based on his strong performances in the earlier rounds this season. "I knew that my YZF R6 was capable of winning. It was up to me to push my riding up another notch to finish first. After a safe start, I went into the lead on the second lap and managed to build up an almost 10 sec cushion. That was enough to pass lapped riders and let me ease off at the end of the race without letting the guys behind me get too close."
In Superbike, Kevin's race was more difficult. "I flubbed my start big-time, and ended up about 10th after the first lap. By the time I got back up to 3rd, the leaders were gone. At that point, I chose to stay where I was, rather than chase the leaders without knowing if I could catch them and risk losing everything by falling." The weekend was also a great morale booster for Kevin. "The whole team worked well all weekend, and we now know that we can win every time we race. It's a great feeling!"
Pascal experienced another frustrating weekend. "The Calgary track is very bumpy, so much so that I never had the confidence to really attack it like all the other guys do. In Pro 600, I was only able to hold on to my 6th place from qualifying, a great shame on a bike that Kevin showed was a winner. Superbike was more satisfying; I had a great start, and was third when Kevin came by. I hoped that I could hang on but Francis Martin got by at the end and I finised 5th."
But things are improving for Pascal. "We are going to Mosport for a double-header, on a smooth high-speed track that suits my riding. With two weeks of rest and preparation before then, the others all better watch out for Kevin and me. We are baaack!"
