Dakar 2017, Stage 5: De Rooy takes lead with second straight win
Iveco's Gerard De Rooy took over the Dakar Rally trucks lead after dominating a shortened fifth stage.
The 438km stage was originally to be run in two parts, separated by a neutralisation zone, but extreme weather meant the second half was cancelled.
While the first part of the running was led by Martin Kolomy (Tatra), with several others within a minute of the Czech driver, de Rooy took over out front and pulled away to win by nearly 12 minutes.
Thus, de Rooy became the fifth different overall leader in as many days, following Kolomy, Martin van den Brink, Eduard Nikolaev and Dmitry Sotnikov.
The latter has fallen to third place behind fellow Kamaz driver Nikolaev, who took second behind de Rooy and is just 2m23s off the lead in the overall classification.
Ayrat Mardeev is the third Kamaz in the top four, ahead of Renault's Pascal de Baar.
Second and fourth overnight, Federico Villagra and Anton Shibalov dropped to sixth and seventh respectively, having both amassed a 50-minute deficit during Friday's stage.
Hans Stacey is the top MAN truck in eighth, narrowly edging out teammate Peter Versluis.
