Dakar: De Rooy stage eight report

This morning at 09.00 a.m. the Organization reported that only 16 trucks made it to the bivouac, including Jan and Gerard de Rooy. Gerard de Rooy suffered the bad luck predicted by Hugo Duisters. He ran out of fuel just 13 kilometres before the bivouac, which resulted in a 16th place. So he had to give up his second place which he had held during the whole stage. He arrived 5.45.42 hours at the winner, Kabirov. Father Jan finished 14th at 5.17.51 hours. They both lost again at the leaders of the overall rankings.

Well-known names like Tchaguine, Loprais, de Azevedo, Stacey and van Ginkel were not included in the 16 trucks that arrived.

Hans Stacey almost drove into a ravine, just 6 kilometres before arrival, and was forced to shift the wheel. He is completely stuck in the sand. Stacey and his crew came out of the cabin but don’t dare to go in anymore, fearing the ravine.

The new overall leader is Firdaus Kabirov. Hans Bekx takes the 2nd place at 1.37.42 hour. Japanese Sugawara (Hino) is 3rd at 3.32.33 hours. Jan de Rooy takes the 10th place at 6.25.52 hours and Gerard de Rooy the 16th place at 9.25.00 hours.

Both assistance vehicles are on their way to Tidjikja in the meantime.

According the organization only 80 motorbikes arrived at the bivouac, together with 48 cars and 16 trucks.
