"We had a lot of troubles again. The disc brakes hardly worked and we had a broken wiring harness, but for the rest it was a fine day".
"With these bad weather circumstances the rally can get 30% worse," told Patrick Zaniroli the remaining adventurers of one of the most severe Dakar-rallies with devilish satisfaction during the briefing on the rest day. His audience: 128 motor bikers out of the original 230 and 152 men with more than two wheels: in the beginning 233 cars and trucks at the start in Barcelona.
Zaniroli was served hand and foot. At the beginning of the 483 kilometres long special Atâr -- Atâr it looked like he was right. The sandstorms howled around the ears when the first motor bikers, already depressed by the death of colleague motor biker Jose Manuel Perez last night in the hospital of Alicante, started.
The rally has its own unwritten laws and so they started in time. Further the day it appeared that the bad weather circumstances again caused many to fall by the wayside. As the convoy was already on its way, the 10th stage was finished but it was decided to reduce tomorrow's Special (from Atâr to Kiffa) from 656 kilometres to 400 kilometres. The competitors will start with the liaison already after checkpoint 2.
In the truck category the Russians showed their class again. Only Jan de Rooy and Hans Bekx could stay a bit close to them. Tchaguine, who had a flat tyre already in the beginning, needed 17.09 minutes more than his team-mate Kabirov. Gerard de Rooy, who was first at checkpoint 1 after 203 kilometres and 3rd at checkpoint 2 after 293 kilometres, lost twice some time because of a broken left and right front spring. Finally his father had a good day; he finished 3rd and needed 26.04 minutes more than Kabirov. Hans Bekx lost 35.57 minutes. Hans Stacey had a serious mechanical engine problem. But the organization allowed 15 hours for today's special, so who knows.
Jan de Rooy was satisfied: "we had a lot of troubles again. The disc brakes hardly worked and we had a broken wiring harness, but for the rest it was a fine day."
Gerard the Rooy finally finished 10th at 1.10.38 hours.
"It was enough to make you cry. In the beginning on the lead and than driving with two broken springs. That's enough to loose your good temper," told a sad Tom Colsoul. However, the Team Gauloises de Rooy also has a reason to celebrate because also Hugo Duisters makes it to the finish so the Team is complete again.
In the overall rankings Jan moved up from the 9th to the 7th place, while Gerard, who was far behind overall, takes the 14th place in the meantime.
